OEM continues to work with the National Weather Service to monitor the path of Hurricane Earl. At this time, it appears Hurricane Earl will not directly hit New York City. Still, OEM encourages New Yorkers to prepare for coastal storm hazards like rain and wind.

-Protect your home by bringing inside loose, lightweight objects, such as lawn furniture, garbage cans, garden tools, and toys. Anchor objects that will be unsafe to bring inside, like gas grills or propane tanks. Turn off propane tanks.
-Place valuables in waterproof containers or plastic bags to protect from flooding damage.
-Check on friends, relatives, and neighbors, especially those with disabilities or special needs, and assist them with their preparation.
-Check and restock your emergency supply kit (http://nyc.gov/html/oem/html/get_prepared/supplies.shtml) in case of power outages.

Stay informed about Hurricane Earl. Tune into local media outlets, NYC.gov, and 311.

Inspired by my ReadyNYC post, my wife ordered this a while back. I kind of made fun her, but now I’m impressed. Looks like a good Go Bag. All you really need to do is throw some portable food in and this could be incredibly helpful and possibly life saving.  Check out the un-Boxing:

West Pond Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

Shorebird Stopover

Naturalist Rob Bourque leads this hike through the refuge to see migrating shorebirds.

Pretty good article in The Wall Street Journal about Rockaway. Pretty good stuff.

When Marlen Waaijer moved to Far Rockaway in 2002, the portion of Jamaica Bay nearest her house was a de facto garbage dump—trash would wash up along the marshes and some residents even tossed their refuse there. So she started cleaning up.

“I just started picking up trash. Taking up one bag at a time,” Ms. Waaijer said.
